I have written articles for Surrey Rocks Magazine and ‘The Edit’ which is the blog part of the website Jobsinbeauty.co.uk.

I have also written a novel mostly about spray tanning vampires called ‘The Monster Spray Tanning Company’ (Available as a paperback on Amazon and a digital download in my Instagram/Etsy shop)

I am currently working on two other spray tanning based novels, both of which are more than half complete. ‘Love In A Spray Tan Tent’ a romantic comedy, written for the 2022 National Novel Writing Month and a ‘whodunit’ called ‘The Spray Tanning Murders’.

Competitions and Prizes

In November 2022 I won Spray Tan Artist of the year, an accolade awarded by ukhairawards.co.uk. “The GB Beauty Awards are judged anonymously by a panel of professionals in the Beauty industry. This Awards ceremony is to celebrate the talents of MUA, Nail Techs, self-employed, beauty salons to educators and influencers throughout the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland.”

Unfortunately client confidentiality does not permit me to name all the celebrities I have spray tanned but they include a very famous pop star and one of my regular clients is a well-known socialite and TV pundit.

Founders Story

Once upon a time, back in October 2018, I was working as a Computer Engineer in Weybridge, idly browsing through eBay, like you do. I was not looking for anything in particular, just seeing if anything caught my interest.

One of the things I noticed was a spray tanning machine, with tent, for twenty one quid. This looked like a bit of a bargain since I imagined that it would cost more than that just to get a spray tan, so I put in a bid. To my surprise my bid was successful and I picked the stuff up from Woking next lunchtime. In fact it was an even better deal than I was expecting because the woman also threw in over a litre of tanning solution (still in date).

I was feeling pretty pleased with myself on the drive home until it struck me that I did not have the faintest idea how to spray tan anyone. EBay to the rescue once more. I found an online course on spray tanning for ten quid. Result! Now I know it is not possible to learn spray tanning properly online but ten quid! Actually the course was not bad at all. Obviously not as good as a face to face one but it did provide me with the basics and also required three case studies. The long suffering girlfriend was one, and she also volunteered her sister and one of her friends.

This was when I got the bug. They all loved it. In spite of my woeful inexperience I was making these women (according to them) look better, and therefore feel better about themselves. I decided that it was worth taking more seriously and went on several ‘proper’ courses. I have now passed the Sienna X lvl3 Master Tanner course, Fake Bake’s  Professional Spray Tan Expert and many more. 

I was made redundant from my job not long after that and decided to try and make a go of spray tanning full time. 

Slowly but surely my clientele started to expand. It took a pasting during COVID but is now stronger than ever. I wrote my own website, started taking social media (particularly Instagram) seriously and that is how Spray Tanning Guy began.

SOCIAL AND GREEN

All the products I use are cruelty free and vegan. I use an energy efficient HVLP system, the Aura Allure. Being mobile there is no avoiding some sort of carbon footprint although I do my best to minimise it. I have been accredited by the good business charter, an organisation that deals with social and green issues, and taken the Beauty Guild Transgender Awareness course and the MASCED Melanoma And Skin Cancer Early Detection accreditation program.

Plans for The Future

I have designed a board game called ‘Beauty Billionaire’ which I would like to see produced, I might well try to crowdsource it with Kickstarter.

I am not truly ambidextrous (I do most things right handed but write with my left hand) but with spray tanning I can use either hand. I have seen a video of the world record number of spray tans in an hour which is one hundred and seven. The spray tanner, Kristin Little, was only using one gun and one hand. With the right backing I am pretty sure I could smash that record.

There are currently around sixteen poems on my Instagram, including a sonnet, several limericks, a villanelle and even a haiku. I might make an anthology of spray tanning poems. There are also four original songs there. Some more might bring the possibility of an album, or possibly a spray tanning musical. 

Who knows what else might be on the horizon?
